Ammonia is produced from natural gas and air. OCI Nitrogen produces 1 million tons of ammonia annually at two plants in Geleen (NL). This ammonia is primarily used in the production of fertilizers. It also has technical applications such as the production of polymer components including:
- caprolactam (for example for nylon)
- melamine (for example for resins and coatings)
- acrylonitrile (for example for adhesives and solvents).
Ammonia is also used in the production of organic and bioorganic amines and amino acids. Substantial quantities of ammonia are utilised in the production of acrylic fibres, nylon-6, nylon-66, and amines with a large number of technical applications.
